LGBTQ+ People In Tech Industry

A Report About LGBTQIA+ Community #

The lack of diversity in industries doesn’t just leave workers feeling alienated; it can also make them feel unsafe. That’s certainly true for the LGBTQ+ community, with only 76% of LGBTQ+ workers reporting they feel safe in their workplace and 64% of trans and gender nonconforming (GNC) individuals saying the same, according to a report from Blind.

The Obstacles #

The obstacles start at the first step for LGBTQ+ community: recruitment. Even they have more experience than their opponents, most of the firms tend to give the priority to the straight people. But even bigger challenges await after an LGBTQ+ employee accepts an offer. In some situations, assuming someone’s LGBTQ+ identity can create an uncomfortable situation among colleagues. In others, it can create a hostile work environment with serious outcomes.

This injustice and prejudice may discourage LGBTQ+ people for working efficiently. Fortunately some of them don’t give up so easily and despite the some narrow minded firms and people, these insistent people managed to get to the top and made their voices heard.

Successful Names From LGBTQIA+ Community #

Ana Arriola, partner and product designer at Microsoft; Chris Hughes, cofounder of Facebook; Arlan Hamilton, cofounder and CEO of Backstage Capital; Peter Thiel, cofounder of PayPal, Palantir, and Founders Fund are just a few names from LGBTQ+ community who overcame the obstacles simply because they are different.Ana Arriola, partner and product designer at Microsoft; Chris Hughes, cofounder of Facebook; Arlan Hamilton, cofounder and CEO of Backstage Capital; Peter Thiel, cofounder of PayPal, Palantir, and Founders Fund are just a few names from LGBTQ+ community who overcame the obstacles simply because they are different.

Along with these successes of LGBTQ+ people, lots of firms have started to show their supports to LGBTQ+ people by not treating them differently from any other human being . Also a number of diversity initiatives aimed at LGBTQ+ people in the tech sector have emerged in recent years like StartOut which was established in 2009 and aims to “increase the number, diversity, and impact of LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs” and Queer Coders which is a community for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer coders, developers, programmers, designers, analysts, data wranglers, “technophiles,” and allies. It is also an important resource for companies looking to hire LGBTQ+ programmers and vice versa.

Firms Supporting LGBTQIA+ Community #

There are a lot more initiatives and firms like these that support LGBTQ+ community. As we can see, humanity has come a long way and people started to understand that love is just love. However, we are not at the finish line yet. There are still homophobic firms that don’t even consider hiring a LGBTQ+ person and even if they did, don’t even try to cover their hostility towards them.

I sincerely hope that, with rising numbers of firms that treats LGBTQ+ people like any other human being, not just the other firms but the whole world will change their hostile perspective towards LGBTQ+ community.
